Galician Government questioned on microplastics spillage

The Galician Government is being questioned at the State level about the management of the spillage over Galician shores of microplastic pellets lost from a container ship. In a high share interview, Galician Deputy President and Environmental Minister Ángeles Vázquez was not capable to refute the accusations about lack of due diligence, delayed response and insufficiency of deployed resources.

Analysis

During the last month an increasingly concerning sequence of news reached regional and then state level media, informing about a case of environmental pollution in the Galician shores. Governmental reaction so far consisted in minimizing the impact, rejecting to deploy anti-contamination resources, and blaming the central Government. Similarities with the Prestige spillover in 2002, which caused the demise of the PP government, raises concerns about the capacity of both the Government to deal with the spill over, and the campaign manager to lead the framing of the discussion, beyond just keeping the incumbent candidate out of the focus. No opposition candidates have managed to distinctively lead a response.
